Safe to spend

How much could leave the account today without any day ahead falling below your reserve.

Safe to spend is worked out in four steps: cash → obligations → reserve → safe to spend.

  1. 1Cash: the balance from the latest bank statement.
  2. 2Obligations: everything already dated in the next ninety days — the bills you owe, salaries on pay day, payroll taxes on the 10th, VAT on the 20th — against the invoices customers are due to pay.
  3. 3The lowest day: Profflow runs the balance forward day by day and finds the lowest point.
  4. 4Reserve: your reserve is taken off that lowest point. What is left is safe to spend.

It is not the balance minus this month’s bills. A large tax payment in six weeks lowers what is safe to spend today, because the money has to be there on that day.

If the lowest day falls below the reserve, safe to spend is zero and What to do shows the shortfall, its date and what to collect or move first.
